rAccogliamo

O.N.D.E. - UWC

O.N.D.E. – UWC – Optimization for Networked Data in Envinronmental Urban Waste Collection –  is a pilot project funded by the Piedmont Region. It is the result of the collaboration between European Research Institute, Politecnico di Torino, the CDU services (company specialized in waste management services, active in 17 municipalities in the Turin hinterland), Moltosenso and Nord Engineering companies. Eri has especially contributed to the design and the communication of the project. The purpose of the project is to reorganize the collection of waste in urban areas by involving citizens together with the company that provides the service and the administrations, through the use of technology (see the video presentation of O.N.D.E. – UWC:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQk_9Kti0nk).
In particular, three application software have been developed. They allow:

  • the citizens of 17 municipalities to know all the waste collection points located in the territory, the timing of the recovery services door-to-door and the position of vehicles dedicated to the pick up;
  • the company that provides the collection service to receive information on the state of filling of bins;
  • the administrations to monitor the activities and assess the use of funds allocated to them.

The project started in July 2015 and is still ongoing.

DECATASTROPHIZE

The Decatastrophize project (Decat) was launched in February 2016 following the partnership between various European actors (European Research Institute, Cyprus University of Technology, Ciprus Civil Defense, Bureau de Recherches et géologiques Minières, Foundation for Research & Technology, Technical University of Crete, Geoview system Ltd., GeoSolutions, Universidad de Alcalá) united by one goal: manage and prevent environmental risks through the implementation of common systems aiming to alert and secure the citizens in case of natural calamities (such as floods or earthquakes) or man-made disasters. Decat intends to adopt a single common platform, resulting from the combination of different computer systems with geolocation, able to raise the alarm quickly in case of emergency, in order to allow the adoption of immediate decisions and the intervention of Civil Defense. Indeed, a common operational framework has the advantage of simplifying the cooperative planning and helping improve the response to dangerous situations. The use of such systems will be field-tested through simulations that will be conducted in six member States. By carrying out the project, ERI has worked with the Civil Defense of the Province of Alessandria, the Sardinia Region and the Municipality of Vittoria (Ragusa, Sicily).

DONG FILM FEST

The Dong Film Fest is the first Italian festival dedicated to emerging and independent Chinese film, that took place at the Cinema Massimo in Turin from 4 to 6 November 2016.
The festival aims to raise awareness, in Turin and Piedmont, about the Chinese culture through cinema and to create a fertile ground on which to build the foundations for a closer cooperation with China, starting from the film production. The ultimate goal is to consolidate a common universal sense of identity.

The project was promoted by Associazione Culturale Dong, in partnership with the European Research Institute – who took part to the design and worked on the communication of the event – Angi (Italian-Chinese New Generation Association), the Communication University of Shanxi (CUSX), Cinema Massimo, the DAMS, the Oriental Art Museum, the National Museum of Cinema in Turin and the social cooperative Kalata.

The Dong Film Fest also enjoys the support of: City of Turin, Piedmont Region, Film Commission Torino – Piemonte and Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti in Turin.

The festival showed for the first time the five first works made by independent Chinese directors, as well as five short films, four of which were made by the Communication University of Shanxi students.

The event held in November represents only the first part of a broader international project aimed to create a virtuous circle in which the exchange of views between Italy and China, between West and East, can help to understand each other’s cultures. The Dong Film Fest will have an edition in China in spring 2017, first in the Shanxi region, the cradle of ancient Chinese culture, at the Communication University of Shanxi, Taiyuan – one of the most important and forefront university campuses in China – and then in Shanghai. The aim is to introduce teachers and students works that tell Italy and at the same time are an expression of the creative ferment that is animating the national stage.

SUPPORT TO LEGAL AID IN LEBANON

The project Support to the Legal Aid in Lebanon has been developed by La Sagesse University, one of the leading universities of Beirut, through its Human Rights Legal Clinic and its Research Centre, in partnership with the European Research Institute. The aim of the project – that started in 2015 and is still in progress – is to improve the overall performance of legal aid delivery in Lebanon.
The situation is particularly worrisome in prisons and detention centers where, due to the increase in the number of detainees in the light of the massive influx of Syrian refugees in Lebanon, inmates have less opportunity to take advantage of a quality legal aid service. The inaccessibility to a quality legal aid service leads to a breach to the principles of fairness and justice and to a very long wait for detainees before trials.

The project aims to:

  • empower the different stakeholders involved in the legal aid system by strengthening their capacity to provide quality legal aid services;
  • institutionalize and modernize the legal aid structures implemented by local Non-governmental organizations;
  • enhancing access of marginalized population to quality legal aid services;
  • transferring EU knowledge and best practices in matters related to legal aid in Lebanon.

The fourth goal will be ensured by ERI which will bring its expertise to provide local players with the opportunity to develop an effective and functional system of rules and procedures, looking at the highest European and international standards relating to legal aid services. This endeavour led by the La Sagesse University along with ERI and the other partners in Lebanon and abroad will empower all relevant stakeholders to extend their legal aid services and improve its quality and provide necessary support and expertise on an institutional level, helping in the promotion of international human right standards through their incorporation within the Lebanese legal aid system.
